RISE by DELTA Q with STARCK

2022 is indeed special, as this is also the year we can finally disclose the most challenging and revolutionary project develop by Diverge – Grupo Nabeiro Innovation Center.

Together we created RISE, the Reversed Injection System Experience.
This is not only a new coffee brewing system, it is probably the biggest technological breakthrough since the creation of the coffee capsule system decades ago. This team did what was thought to be unreachable - putting coffee inside a cup, but coming from underneath, challenging physics, and known standards. This means that a new exclusive cup had also to be developed. Along with it, the machine was created to allow this gravity fight to be possible, introducing innovative technology never used before on a coffee machine, providing an unseen, exquisite and superlative espresso coffee.

To make it even more iconic and to make this a more memorable journey, we had Philippe Starck onboard to design the machine and cups with us, on what he called “a magical project”.  For the team, having the opportunity to work with one of the most recognised designers in the world, was a landmark in our careers and life.

The journey started in 2015 with the development of the technology – what started out as an internal challenge, resulted in this innovative system. During the first two years of development, we had evidence that the extraction system delivered a superior beverage, not only in terms of coffee characteristics, but also in terms of consumer experience. And on the first public presentation – during the Web Summit 2017 – we knew we had to take it to the next level, making this experience accessible to domestic users.

For me this project was different than usual - I was not the main designer of the machine, my role was to work alongside Philippe Starck and with our engineering team during all development stages. Once we went into production I represented the design team with suppliers and manufacturers. It was a very enriching process, to see Starck working, making his design decisions, interacting with me and the reengineering team. Four years of intense work, overcoming immense challenges, making sure we could fit all this technology inside a small volume, and aiming to deliver a simple, elegant, intuitive, efficient product for the consumer to enjoy a superlative coffee.
